James Chipman Fletcher was born June 5, 1919 in Millburn, New Jersey. Received his BA from Columbia University in 1940, Ph.D from California Institute of Technology in 1948. Named as President of the University of Utah in 1964. Was given a temporary leave of absence in 1971 when appointed by Pres. Nixon to head NASA.
