Born in Pittsfield, Mass., Dec.28,1791; graduated from Williams College, 1806; studied law in Kentucky with Henry Clay, 1808; was active in War of 1812; Appointed brigadier general by President Adams; settled in Detroit and became prominent lawyer; judge of Probate Court, 1830; as attorney general of Michigan Territory, had large part in framing military end educational law; died from the cholera in Detroit, Aug.13, 1834.
