Germanist and author.

Bluhm was born in Germany, emigrated to the United States in 1925 and earned master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Wisconsin in 1929 and 1932, respectively. He was a professor of German for 30 years at Yale University before coming to Boston College in 1967. In 1968 he founded BC's Dept. of Germanic Studies, which he chaired until his retirement in 1976. A prodigious writer, Bluhm is known especially for his work on Martin Luther and Goethe. He died in 1993.
