Biography
The Los Angeles Times was founded in 1881 when Nathan Cole Jr. and Thomas Gardiner hired the Mirror Printing Office and Book Bindery to print the first edition of the Los Angeles Daily Times ; Cole (and Gardiner) gave up ownership of The Times to Jesse Yarnell, T.J. Caystile and S.J. Mathes, the printers of the newspaper and the owners of the Los Angeles Daily Times ; they hired Harrison Gray Otis as editor (1882), who turned it into a success; Otis and H. H. Boyce purchased the Times and Mirror properties (1884) and incorporated as the Times-Mirror Company; Otis bought out his partner in 1886.
