William Augustus Merrill, professor of classics at the University of California, was born at Newburyport, Massachusetts, on September 14, 1860. He studied at Amherst, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in 1880 and his Master's in 1884. He continued his studies at Ohio University where he won his doctorate in 1893 and began his teaching career. He later taught at Miami University and at Indiana University, coming to the University of California in 1894. He edited Lucretius and other text books, and contributed numerous articles to philological journals.
