Variant namesEstablished in 1947 by the Conference Board of Associated Research Councils, CIES is a private agency cooperating with the U.S. government in the administration of Fulbright scholar grants for advanced research and university teaching. CIES, formerly the Committee on International Exchange of Persons, recommends American scholars for university lectureships and postdoctoral research abroad and manages the Fulbright-Hays program for visiting scholars in the United States. It also provides administrative services for visiting scholars and organizes conferences which familiarize them with cultural, educational, and social institutions in the United States. In addition to the Fulbright program, CIES administers the Indo-American Fellowship Program, the Spain Research Fellowships, and the NATO Research Fellowship Program.
