Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Alpha Helix Program Management Office.
Per F. Scholander proposed in 1961 that the National Science Foundation fund a research vessel designed as a floating biological laboratory and a series of expeditions. R/V Alpha Helix was built in 1966 and operated by SIO. The ship was used for some twenty expeditions between 1966-1980.
