Hawkins was a nationally-known photographer of equestrian sport, based in Warrenton. His career spanned fifty years and took him all over the country to equestrian events of all kinds. His work frequently appeared in popular magazines such as The Chronicle of the Horse, Spur and The Saturday Evening Post. His most famous photograph was of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (included in this collection), which appeared on the cover of Life magazine in 1962.
