The Student War Council of Northwestern University was founded in the summer of 1941, and began its activities immediately following the outbreak of World War II. The Council was composed of presidents of campus organizations, representatives of campus dormitories, and interested students. The Council coordinated a variety of student activities associated with the war effort. These included assisting in the process of the registration and counselling for the draft, the sale of "defense stamps," the presentation of speakers on wartime issues, the offering of non-credit "defense courses," and the involvement of Northwestern women in USO efforts as "junior hostesses."
