John S. Fisher was born in Indiana County, Pa. in 1867. He became a principal in the Indiana Public Schools and studied law. In 1889, he was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate. He was elected Governor of Pennsylvania in 1927 and held the post until 1931. He returned to Pittsburgh following his term and took a position as president of the National Union Fire Insurance Company. He also acted as president of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania before he died in 1940.
