Tilden and sent to Florida to advise in the matter of contested elections in several counties; counsel before U.S. Electoral Commission which decided the contest in 1877 by an 8-7 decision; from 1884-1893 continued as assistant U.S. district attorney for the City of New York; later served as Commissioner of Taxes and Assessments for New York; in 1890 appointed a member of the Board of Visitors of U.S. Naval Academy.
