Brown, Dillon S., 1912-1998
Variant namesDillon Brown was born in Genoa, Illinois. He earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Illinois in 1935, followed by a master's degree in horticulture from the University of West Virginia and a Ph.D. in horticulture from Ohio State University in 1944. Brown served on the faculty of the Division of Pomology at the University of Illinois from 1941 to 1947. From 1947 until 1949, he was a senior horticulturist with the Hawaiian Pineapple Company in Honolulu. In 1949, he joined the faculty of the Department of Pomology at the University of California, Davis, where he was involved in research, teaching, and outreach activities until his retirement in 1979. During his tenure at UC Davis, Brown taught courses on fruit tree physiology and production systems. His research focus was on the influence of cultural practices and climatic conditions on flower development in fruit trees. He was instrumental in determining the chilling requirements for the major cultivars of temperate fruit and nut species grown in California. Also, Brown investigated apple tree physiology in relation to various cultural practices and provided solutions for problems of apple production in California. Brown passed away on June 22, 1998, in Davis, at age 86.

Biography
Dillon Brown was born in Genoa, Illinois. He earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Illinois in 1935, followed by a master's degree in horticulture from the University of West Virginia and a Ph.D. in horticulture from Ohio State University in 1944.
Brown served on the faculty of the Division of Pomology at the University of Illinois from 1941 to 1947. From 1947 until 1949, he was a senior horticulturist with the Hawaiian Pineapple Company in Honolulu. In 1949, he joined the faculty of the Department of Pomology at the University of California, Davis, where he was involved in research, teaching, and outreach activities until his retirement in 1979.
