Hide Profile

Sylvester S. and Margaret Forney had two sons born to them in Kansas and one survived. Ross Huber (R. H.) Forney was the second son born on Sept. 11, 1890 in Kansas. Sylvester started out farming and by 1910 he was a shoemaker that owned his own shop in Lawrence, KS. R. H. attended and graduated from the University of Kansas. By 1920, R. H. had married Katheryn and moved to Waco Texas. In 1927, R. H. Forney founded Forney Engineering Company as a manufacturer of oil and gas burners for the electric utility industry. In the early 1950's, Forney began developing remote burner control and furnace safety systems. Mr. Forney was active in his community during these years. He established an endowment at the University of Kansas for scholarships and professorships in the engineering department. He retired from the Company in 1965. The company continued to grow into an international corporation that still exists today as Forney Corporation. R. H. Forney passed away in Dallas, TX in April, 1975.

Cerita Day came to visit her sister in Washington Territory in the fall of 1875. According to her letter of 1876 to her cousin Maggie, she met her husband-to-be during this visit. On April 3, 1876 Cerita Day married Peter Meyer in Walla Walla County, WA. They were both from Stevens County, WA. Cerita had been born about 1856. And Peter Meyer had been born about 1841. They had several children. It appears that R.H. Forney's mother, Margaret, may have been Cerita's cousin, Maggie. The Meyer family settled and raised their family in Washington State.

From the description of R.H. Forney's collection of Cerita Day Meyer's correspondence, 1962 May 1, 1876. (Washington State Library, Office of Secretary of State). WorldCat record id: 210360168
