Franklin Buchanan (1800-1874) of Maryland was a United States Navy officer and later admiral in the Confederate States Navy.

Born in Baltimore on Sept. 17, 1800. At fifteen joined the U.S. Navy serving under Oliver Hazard Perry. Became the first superintendent of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Commanded Matthew Perry's flagship during an 1852 expedition to Japan. Given command of the Washington Navy Yard in 1855. Resigned to join the Confederate Navy. Commanded the ironclad Virginia. Wounded during an attack on the Cumberland and the Congress. Also commanded the Tennessee. Wounded and taken prisoner off the coast of New Orleans by Admiral Davis Farrgut's fleet. After the war served as president of Maryland Agricultural College. Died in Easton, Md., May 11, 1874.
