Hide Profile

The Applegate family, prominent in Oregon history and politics, first emigrated to Oregon in 1843. The three Applegate brothers, Charles (1806-1879), Lindsay (1808-1892), and Jesse (1811-1888), traveled together with their families on the Oregon Trail. Lindsay served as an interpreter during the Klamath/Modoc Indian Treaty negotiations in 1864 and later became a sub-agent at the Klamath Indian Agency. His son, Oliver C. Applegate, fluent in more than one Indian language, fought in the Modoc Indian War and later served as superintendent of the Indian training school at the Klamath Indian Agency. A lifetime Republican.

Applegate ran unsuccessfully for Oregon Secretary of State. Oliver C. Applegate, Jr., grew up on the Klamath Indian Agency and attended the Klamath public schools. After serving in World War I, Oliver C. Applegate, Jr., began work in the Standard Oil advertisement department. His interests included theatre, design, photography, and historical writing.
