Variant namesThe USS Maine was sunk near Cuba in 1898, sparking the Spanish-American War of 1898. The collection was originally owned by Mr. Harry P. Merrill, a native of Turner, Me., who was the chief engineer of the raising and burial of the battleship in Havana Harbor in 1912.
