Hide Profile

The First North Carolina Infantry Regiment was mustered into service on May 15, 1861 with the intention that its recruits would serve for a six-month period. Enlistees came from nearly all regions of North Carolina, including the eastern low country, central North Carolina (including recruits from the University of North Carolina) and the Mecklenburg County area. The First NC Infantry distinguished itself in combat at the Battle of Big Bethel, Virginia, on June 10, 1861, and soon acquired the nickname the "Bethel Regiment" as a result. At the completion of its six-month duration, this regiment was re-organized as the 11th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, also known as the 11th North Carolina Troops. The 11th went on to participate in the battles of Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg. It was also present at the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865.
