Du Pont family.
Du Pont family arrived in the U.S. from France in 1800. Subsequently E.I. du Pont purchased land on the Brandywine River north of Wilmington, Del., and began a gunpowder mill in 1802 which grew to be a major manufacturer of explosives and later chemicals. Members of the Du Pont family became leaders in Delaware's economy, society, and public life.
