Robert Allen Goldwin was born on April 16, 1922 in New York City. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, and received a B.A. from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland in 1950. He received an M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1954, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 1963. He served as Director of Research for the American Foundation for Political Education, Chicago, 1951 to 1960; Lecturer in Political Science and Director, Public Affairs Conference, University of Chicago, 1960 to 1966; Fellow at the Guggenheim Foundation, 1966; Associate Professor of Political Science and Director, Public Affairs Conference Center, Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, 1966 to 1969; and Dean and Charles Hammond Elliott Tutor, St. John's College, 1969 to 1973. In March 1973, Goldwin was Special Advisor to Donald Rumsfeld, Ambassador to NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). When Rumsfeld took over from Alexander Haig as President Ford's Chief of Staff, Goldwin assisted him at the White House as Special Consultant to the President, December 1974 to October 1976. In November 1975, when Rumsfeld became Secretary of Defense, Goldwin then reported to Richard Cheney, Rumsfeld's successor. In addition to his White House duties, Goldwin continued to work with Secretary Rumsfeld on occasional projects and speeches. In 1976, Goldwin left the White House to serve as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld. Since 1977 he served as Director of Seminar Programs at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, Washington, D.C.
