Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1855; became deaf before the age of twenty, but, through lipreading, was able to manage uncommonly well; resided in New York City with sisters and a widowed mother in 1912; moved to live with a younger sister by 1922; died at her home in East Orange, New Jersey, April 30, 1939.
