Variant namesJohn Lewis (b. February 21, 1940, Troy, AL) was an American politician and a prominent civil rights leader. From 1987 to his death on July 17, 2020, he was the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district. As chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Lewis was one of the "Big Six" leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. Over the course of his career, he was a major voice for and influence on civil rights issues.
