Alice Mackenzie was the sister of Anne Mackenzie (1813/14-1877) and Charles Frederick Mackenzie (1825-1862), who later became bishop of Central Africa.

In December 1854, John William Colenso, bishop of Natal, offered to take Charles with him to Natal as his archdeacon. Charles accepted this offer and they set sail in March 1855. Anne accompanied Charles on this journey and in 1859 they were joined by Alice.
