Author likely Hodijah Baylies Meade (also author of MSS 1720 in the Special Collections Library, University of Virginia), according to identification made by Special Collections volunteer Mary Roy Dawson Edwards and Civil War author and historian Robert K. Krick. Meade, b. March 2, 1838, in Amelia County, Virginia, attended the University of Virginia, the Virginia Military Institute, and the University of Pennsylvania where he received his medical degree in 1861; served as surgeon at the post at Lexington for the 1st Virginia Battalion, and at Richmond, Culpeper, Staunton, Danville, and Wilmington; d. in 1874 or 1875 and buried in Augusta County, Virginia.
