John Swinnerton Phillimore gained both his Master of Arts degree and Doctorate of Law from the University of St Andrews . was Professor of Humanity, Glasgow University 1906-1926 . Was a Lecturer of Christ Church (1895), Tutor and Student (1896-1899); Professor of Greek at Glasgow University ( 1899-1906 ); appointed by the University of California to hold the Sather Professorship of Classical there for the year 1914-1915. His publications include: Musa Clauda or Latin Versions, Propertius (text) (1901 and 1911); Index Verborun (1906); Things New and Old (1918) and The Hundred best Latin Hymns (1925)
