Mather Industrial School was founded in 1867 by Rachel Crane Mather, who was commissioned by the American Mission Society to establish a school for Negroes near Beaufort, S.C. The grade 8 through 12 boarding school for Negro girls; later named Mather School; Woman's American Baptist Home Mission Society began assisting the school in 1887; closed in 1968 when it merged with Benedict College.
