Austin Philip Guiles (1894-1953) was a key figure in the development of the clinical pastoral education movement, which developed into the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. He was a student of Anton T. Boisen and worked with him at the Worcester State Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts in the late 1920s and early 1930s. There he employed the case study teaching method, which was intended to help counselors develop a clinical theology.
