Shirley McFadden was born Shirley Converse Hamilton in Denver, Colo. on September 23, 1916. She was a descendant of Colo. pioneers, Frederick and Sophia Converse who moved to Central City, Colo. in 1860 and ran a hotel in Black Hawk, Colo. Shirley Hamilton attend Cole Junior High School and graduated from Denver South High School (1934), St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing (1937), and also earned a BS degree in sociology from Colorado A and M. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Luke's Hospital (Denver, Colo.) and Denver General Hospital. Married to Bryant L. McFadden (1906-1983) in 1944, the couple had one son, Ellis McFadden. Shirley McFadden died in Englewood, Colo. on December 20, 2003.
