Dorchester (Boston, Mass.)
Incorporated in the Massachusetts Bay Colony on 7 Sept. 1630; in 1633 the citizens of Dorchester established a form of local government by appointing twelve "selectmen" who would meet monthly to deal with town business and decisions; this system of government remained in place, with few alterations, until Dorchester was annexed to the City of Boston in 1870.
