John E.H. Hancock was born in Warwickshire, England, in 1929, and graduated with his doctorate from the Imperial College in London. In 1955, he came to Reed College as a Ford Foundation intern and instructor in chemistry. He remained as an assistant professor of chemistry and received tenure in 1961. His interests included early music and the development of computer assisted instruction for students of organic chemistry. He died in 1989.
