The Massachusetts Public Building Commission (1947-1953) was replaced successively by the Division of Building Construction (Commission on Administration and Finance) (1953-1962), the Bureau of Building Construction (Central Services Division, Executive Office for Administration and Finance) (1963-1981), and the Division of Capital Planning and Operations (Executive Office for Administration and Finance) (1981-present).

St 1947, c 466 established the Massachusetts Public Building Commission. It was replaced successively per St 1953, c 612 by the Division of Building Construction (Commission on Administration and Finance), per St 1962, c 757 (effective Jan. 1963) by the Bureau of Building Construction (Central Services Division, Executive Office for Administration and Finance), and per St 1980, c 579 (effective July 1981) by the Division of Capital Planning and Operations (Executive Office for Administration and Finance). The division's functions, currently described in MGLA c 7, ss 39A-40D, include planning, design, property management, facilities maintenance, and supervision of construction, acquisition, renovation, repair, and demolition of public buildings (capital facilities) of the Commonwealth and its counties.
