Esther Millar Hamilton was born in Glasgow on 6 December 1906 . Her father Thomas Hamilton was an insurance agent. Prior to attending university, Esther had studied at Glasgow High Scool for Girls. Esther attended the University of Glasgow from 1924-1928 , taking classes in English, Latin (Ordinary) and Greek Ordinary in her first year, Latin (Higher Ordinary), Greek (Higher Ordinary) and Political Philosophy and Social Economics in her second, and Moral Philosophy Zoology and Political Philosophy and Social Economics in her third and final year. She was awarded a certificate of distinction for her Latin (Ordinary) examination results in 1925 and a first class certificate in Social Economics in 1928. She graduated with an MA in June 1928 and subsequently became a hospital almoner. Esther married William Fothringham Sellar (MBChB 1927) in June 1937 and died on 26 May 1994 .
