Founded in 1970 to serve as a cultural, social and organizational center for University of Iowa women and for all women of the Iowa City, Iowa community. Its initial focus was to challenge the university to recognize and combat sexism within the institution. Over time the Center's mission was extended to the entire state of Iowa. As a multi-service agency, it seeks to improve the status of women as a group and to meet the needs of individual women.
Thus it acts as a referral center for community and state services for women, maintains a library of feminist materials, publishes a newsletter, provides information on counseling on issues such as rape, sexuality and careers, and sponsors workshops, speakers and conferences on women's issues. The Center is noted for its brown bag lunch series which provides an informal forum for the interchange of ideas. It also promotes cultural activities such as plays, concerts, films, sports events, and art exhibits.
