Rops was born in Belgium but spent his professional life moving between Belgium and France. A painter, engraver and lithographer, he is known particularly for depicting women in sexually provocative poses. He was a member of the avant-garde in Belgium; he was a founding member of the Société libre des beaux-arts and in 1886 he joined Les XX in Brussels. He was technically innovative and his prints have always been highly regarded by collectors. François Nys was a printer in Paris with whom Rops worked.
