Tallassee Manufacturing Company was incorporated as the Tallassee Falls Manufacturing Company in 1852. It was one of the earliest cotton manufacturing plants in the state of Alabama. Built in the small town of Tallassee (Ala.), it was powered by water from the falls of the Tallapoosa River. During the Civil War, the Tallassee carbine was manufactured in one of the converted factory buildings and was the only Confederate armory in the South not destroyed by Union forces.
