Hugh Smith obtained his first degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He came to Canberra in 1967 to take a PhD at the ANU and joined the Faculty of Military Studies at the Royal Military College as a lecturer in 1971, later transferring to the University College at ADFA in 1986, as Associate Professor of Politics. From 1987 to 1991 he was the Founding Director of the Australian Defence Studies Centre. He took up the position of Visiting Fellow on retirement in February 2004 and his book On Clausewitz (Palgrave Macmillan) appeared in 2005.
