The Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal church traces its history back to around 1855, when Elder James Brown and his wife established a church in Battle Creek. Initially, the congregation met in members' homes, but by 1867 the church had taken up residence at its current location on Van Buren Street. The current church was built between 1906 and 1908, and adopted the name, Mount Zion AME, in 1926. In 1991, the church was listed on the State Register of Historical Places. The church expanded its building in 2004.
