Shaw University Divinity School was founded as the Theological Department of Shaw University in the late 1890s; first bachelor of theology degrees were awarded to four students in 1900; School of Religion was established as a graduate school for theological education in 1933 conferring both the Bachelor of Arts and the bachelor of divinity degrees; in 1961 the School of Religion became Shaw Divinity School offering a three-year graduate program leading to the bachelor of divinity (BD) degree; in 1998 Shaw Divinity School became Shaw University Divinity School.
