Born in New York City in 1931, George Firestone came to Florida as a boy with his family to settle in Miami. Firestone served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1952. He then went into business in Miami and became a leader in many civic organizations.
In 1966, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives from Dade and Monroe Counties, where he served until election to the State Senate in 1972. He left the Senate in 1974. In 1978, he was elected Secretary of State. He served in this position until he resigned in 1987.
