The Nebel Knitting Company was established by William Nebel, a native of Burkhardtsdorf, Saxony, Germany. Nebel emigrated to the United States in 1905 and worked for several hosiery mills in the Northeast until 1913, when he founded Atlas Silk Hosiery in Paterson, N.J. After ten years at Atlas, Nebel moved south to Charlotte. The Nebel Knitting Company first located on East Kingston Avenue. Expansion led to larger facilities on South Boulevard and, eventually, West Worthington Avenue. In April, 1968, the Nebel Knitting Company was purchased by Morris Speizman of Charlotte.
Speizman in turn sold Nebel to Charlotte Packaging Corporation in July, 1968. Charlotte Packaging was merged into Chadbourn Gotham, Inc., which became Chadbourn, Inc. in 1969. The former Nebel mill on Worthington Avenue is a designated Charlotte-Mecklenburg historic landmark and now houses a restaurant.
