Photographer. Harold Cazneaux was born in Wellington, New Zealand in March 1878. His family moved to Adelaide in South Australia in 1889 and Cazneaux worked with his father at the Hammer & Co. photographic studio as a colourist and retoucher. Initially wanting to pursue a career an an artist Cazneaux also attended classes at the Adelaide School of Design. He moved to Sydney in 1904 to work for the same photographic studio and purchased his first camera, experimenting with pictorial photography. In 1905 he married Mabel Winifred Hodge and in 1907 joined the Photographic Society of New South Wales. He held his first solo exhibition in Australia in 1909, which was well-received by critics and the wider public. Cazneaux met the publisher Sydney Ure Smith at his solo exhibition and in 1919 when Smith launched his new monthly magazine 'The Home' he invited Cazneauz to become its official photographer. He also photographed for 'Art in Australia' publications. In 1938 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain and turned his attention to portraiture after 'The Home' ceased publication in 1942. Cazneaux died in 1953.

John Cyril Cato was a writer, historian and society photographer. Born in Tasmania, he worked in London and South Africa before setting up studio in Melbourne. He died on 14/8/1971. Harold Cazneaux, born in New Zealand in 1878, was famous for his series of photographs on "Old Sydney", begun in 1904. In 1909 he staged Australia's first photographic one-man show.
