William Johns Hamlett came to Texas in 1835, settling first in San Augustine, later moving to Shelby County and from there to Anderson County.

He and his wife were the parents of six children. The second of their sons, William J. Hamlett, Jr., was born in Shelby County, Texas in 1842, served in the Confederate Army, and farmed in various locations after the war. He was married in 1865 to Elizabeth McDaniel.
