Joseph Bertram (or Bertrand) Jones, plantation owner, lawyer, and legislator, was born 10 October 1817, in Burke County, Georgia and died 19 December 1896 (place of death uncertain).

An 1839 graduate of Franklin College (now University of Georgia), he studied law in New Haven, Connecticut; married Sarah Lewis (1842) who had studied at New Haven's E.M. Seeley's Boarding School for Young Ladies; established a law practice (1841); was a prominent planter by 1860; and represented Burke County in the state legislature (1863-1866). Sherman made Jones' home in Herndon, Georgia, his headquarters 1 December 1864 on his March to the Sea. Jones' two eldest sons served in the Confederate Army's "cadet corps."
