J. Herbert George, Union soldier and bandmaster. Native of Newbury, Vt., he worked as telegraph operator at Greenfield, Mass. at the beginning of the Civil War. In Sept. 1862, he enlisted as a fifer in the company G of the newly organized 10th Regiment of Vermont Infantry. His brothers also served with the same company. The 10th Regiment fought in Virginia and Maryland. In late 1862, when the company musicians were organized in into a fife and drum corps, George was appointed its Sergeant fifer. Later on he became principal musician and was charged with organizing a regimental band the fifers and drummers. He served as the band's principal musician until the end of the war and was mustered out in June of 1865.
