William J. Canfield was a gay activist in Boston. He was president of the Homophile Union of Boston in 1971-1972, and business manager of the Gay Community News in 1973-1974. He also organized two reunions in 1990 and 1999 for gay activists involved in the Boston gay liberation movement in the 1970s. In addition, William J. Canfield was part of a movement to establish a gay community archives to preserve documentation of the gay movement in Boston. He collected materials from many Boston-area gay organizations.
