Sawyer's Army career (1913-1955) was primarily in Army finance. Born 1894 he enlisted in 1st Vermont Cavalry and later the Infantry (1913-1916). Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and served in World War I in Europe with 1st Infantry Division and 3rd Army Corps. Became Captain (1920) and during 1920's was finance officer at various activities including 3rd Cavalry (1921); 1st Machine Gun Squadron (1922-23), and 1st Corps Area in Conn. (1926). Transferred to War Dept. Finance Dept. (1928-42) and rose to Colonel. During World War II was fiscal director of 8th Service Command (1943-44); fiscal officer for U.S. Army Forces in the Pacific and 288th Finance Disbursing Section in Honolulu (1946). Promoted to Major General and was comptroller of 4th Army and later Chief of Finance (1951). Retired 1955 and founded the Army Finance Association.
