Memorial Church was dedicated in 1932 and incorporates Appleton Chapel, the name of a former building erected on the same site in 1855. The terms Memorial Church and Appleton Chapel refer not only to the buildings, but also to the agencies they contain. The title of the person in charge of Memorial Church was Preacher to the University until 1974, when it was changed to Minister in Memorial Church. The Memorial Church's activities also come under the responsibility of the Board of Preachers, which was replaced in 1975 with the Board of Ministry.
