Helmi Dagmar (Lampila) Mattson was born in 1890 in central Finland. She attended a business college in Helsinki and a Home Economics school in Tampere before emigrating to Canada in 1911. With her husband William, she lived at various times in Minn., N.Y., and Ore. From the time of her arrival in the United States, Mattson was a prolific contributor of articles, poetry and serialized novels to Finnish American newspapers, particularly to Toveritar. In 1920 she became editor of Toveritar, a position she held for ten years. In later years, she was a frequent contributor of articles and poetry to the Työmies-Eteenpäin and Naisten Viiri newspapers. She also took an active interest in Finnish theatre and wrote full-length plays. She was one of the founders of the Northwest Finnish Historical Society (Pohjoislännen Suomalainen Historiaseura) in 1961 and edited the organization's memorial album in 1965.
