Hide Profile

Armand William Forstall, S.J., 1859-1948 was born in France and came to the U.S. in 1885. He was ordained a Jesuit in 1892. From 1904, he stayed in Colorado teaching physics, chemistry, and mathematics until his retirement in 1946. Interested in geology, he did assaying of ore, and installed and ran an 80-kg. horizontal Weischert seismograph in 1909 at the College of the Sacred Heart, Denver, CO [Regis University in1992]. A member of the Jesuit Seismological Service, Fr. Forstall was one of the Jesuits who made significant contributions to the early study of seismology in the United States. In 1908 he submitted the equations for a log-log slide rule, to the Keuffel and Esser Company, which allowed them to manufacture it. He also designed a machine for turning fabric, which was patented in1933.
