Frank Bacon was a character actor born in Marysville, California. He was a journalist and photographer before becoming an actor. His best known role was the character Lightnin' Bill in the play Lightnin', which he co-wrote.

Frank Bacon, actor and playwright was best known for his starring role in LIGHTNIN', a play he co-authored with Winchell Smith.

Prior to his success, Bacon lived in near poverty and obscurity. LIGHTNIN', adapted by Smith from Bacon's comedy THE HOUSE DIVIDED, came to Broadway in 1918 and broke all box office records at the Gaiety Theatre. The play remained a major theatrical success for four years and was breaking records at the Blackstone Theatre in Chicago when Bacon retired from his role due to illness. He died in November of 1922 at the height of his popularity.
