Ridgley, a native of England and the seventh child of Thomas and Lydia Ridgley, became a businessman, selling lamps and investing in real estate in St. Louis, Missouri. On April 20, 1840 he married Susan Lucretia Hill in Alton, Illinois. They made substantial donations to Washington University in St. Louis.
